have the marking "Ciudad Trujillo" on its base?
Rafael Leónidas Trujillo was a dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic for more than 30 years. He rose through the military ranks and seized power in 1930 following a revolt against President Horacio Vásquez.
Trujillo, known as El Jefe (“The Boss”), renamed the capital city from Santo Domingo to Ciudad Trujillo in 1936 as part of his cult of personality.
This name remained in use throughout his dictatorship, which lasted until his assassination in 1961. After his death, the city’s original name, Santo Domingo, was restored.
Trujillo even went so far as to rename the country’s highest mountain, Pico Duarte, to Pico Trujillo.
